The Portola Railroad Museum in the Sierra foothills town of Portola,
California,
north of Reno, Nevada, is operated by the Feather River Rail Society.
It
is located on the former Western Pacific line, now owned by the Union
Pacific,
famous in part for once hosting the California Zephyr, which now runs
over
the former Southern Pacific line to the south. We visited in August
2000
and took the following photographs. We spent a couple of very pleasant
hours
touring the the grounds and the small museum building, chatting with
very
friendly staff and enjoying the UP freights with rumbled through with
considerable
frequency. There's nothing fancy here. It's a 'close to the action'
place
that reflects a proud railroad tradition. Note that the day we were
there
several major pieces of equipment had been moved over to Truckee for
its
annual railroad celebration. We'll be sure to go back.
