Located a couple of hours north of Stockholm, and about a 30 minute
walk from the station, in the beautiful city of Gavle, this
museum contains a modest but very interesting collection of rolling
stock, model trains, diaramas and photos which document the history of
railroading in Sweden. Though somewhat compact in size -- making indoor
photography a real challenge -- there is ample descriptive material in
English to give one a good feel of the collection. The museum has
a small cafe and bookstore and a very nominal admission fee. The
morning I was there in September 2003 I think I was the only visitor.
.
A walk to and from the museum passes through pretty neighborhoods in a
graceful city of water, boulevards and fine buildings.
Coming and going from Gavle takes one through a large and accomodating
station with a very nice restaurant and access to Intercity expresses
which run hourly to and from Stockholm, with an option to take an
alternative faster extra fare X2000 train each hour.
