Today the former Chattanooga Traction Company line is operated by the Norfolk
Southern Railway. Norfolk Southern serves a number of industries along the
Tennessee River, including Signal Mountain Cement and JIT Terminals. Today's
line still includes a four-track yard at C&D Junction, and only the track
extending up Signal Mountain has been removed.
The usual motive power for the line is a single MP15, or a pair of the engines
depending on the number of cars to be moved. While this is the usual arrangement,
photos exist of a GP38 at C&D Junction.
The Traction Company line remains an important part of the Norfolk Southern system,
and it may increase in its importance with planned replacement of the lock at the
Chickamauga Dam, handling traffic that has been loaded onto railcars from barges.
