The Saginaw Railway Museum is housed in a former Pere Marquette depot that was constructed in 1907. In 1983, it was purchased by the Saginaw Valley Railroad Historical Society, Inc. and moved to its present location, which sits on the same rail line as it did in Hemlock (although this section of track has a different railroad owner than back in Hemlock-but to learn that story, you'll have to visit the museum). The Society restored the depot, including constructing an basement, a new indoor restroom, and a handicapped-accessible entrance. In 1984, the museum was designated by the State of Michigan as a State Historic Site. The building houses museum artifacts and displays. The basement of the Saginaw Railway Museum is home to an HO scale model train layout. This layout was built and run by the Saginaw Valley Model Railroad Club, which was dissolved into the Museum Society in 2007. The semaphore from the Hemlock depot when it was closed has been restored and now sits trackside at the depot. The train order board is operable from the agent's bay. In 1990, the Society constructed two tracks, connected to the nearby mainline, to hold rolling stock acquired for display. In 1991, CSX installed a switch to a local spur line (for free!) For more about that rolling stock, including our RS1 Alco locomotive, click HERE. The Society is continuing to update this website on a regular basis, so keep checking back! |
