Schrever is situated between Houma and Thibodeax, in the heart of bayou country and is known as the "Gateway to Bayou Country". Four miles to the north,Thibodaux is the home of Nicholls State University and the Chef John Folse Culinary Institute
To the south a few miles from Schriever is Houma. Houma is know for its Mardi Gras and its loyality to Cajun tradition and culture. Many locals still make their living as their ancestors did, shrimping, fishing, and dredging for oysters. Annie Miller's Son's Swamp Tour is world famous. Ms Annie no longer guides the tours where she used to pet the gators, her sons will be glad to take you out! You should arrange transportation in advance. Not much to see at the Schriever Sunset Stop. When your web page author travelled from Jacksonville to Houston on the Sunset many years ago, German tourists laughed out loud at the condition of the Schriever station. It was then an abandoned looking building with the doors hanging off the hinges and no lights in the building. These recent pictures by Pat Simmons show that a coat of paint and new hinges can make any old SP station look good. |
