The New Orleans depot is a multimodal terminal, as it is also the Greyhound depot for New Orleans. Since Amtrak's Board refuses to reinstate the Sunset east of New Orleans, it is possible to use Greyhound for the rest of a transcontinental trip. But given the chronic lateness of the Sunset due to the Union Pacific's seeming inability to deliver this (or any Amtrak train running on their lines) on time, the savvy traveller must check with both Amtrak AND Greyhound to see if the connection will work on the day he or she wishes to travel.
