Lake Charles in southwest Louisiana is located on old El Camino Real (The King's Highway) or old Spanish Trail and the northeast shore of Lake Charles. One of Lake Charles more renown tourist in the early 1800's was pirate Jean Lafitte. He is said to have visited regularly. Today this legend is celebrated with the Contraband Days Pirate Festival.
Timber was king, bald cypress to the south and long leaf pine to the north. Transportation in Lake Charles evolved from the abundance of timber. First schooners, then later larger ships were built on the shores of the lake, while oxcarts were used in town. The railroads came to town in the 1880's and put the schooners to rest. With the railroad, wealth and population grew, evidenced in the downtown "Carpentier District" pronounced 'shar pah t yeah' , a twenty block area of Victorian homes dating back to the late 1800's and 1900's. The circa 1911 Historic City Hall serves as the City's Arts and Crafts Facility, showcasing traveling exhibitions from around the world, and is right down the street from the Amtrak station. Lake Charles is also home to McNeese State University with 9,000 students! The Louisiana Environmental Research Center is located at McNeese.
