The Amtrak station in Alpine is a substantial building in reasonably good shape. The Sunset Limited/Texas Eagle is the only Amtrak service to Alpine. Why is the town "Alpine?" Texas humour -- the railroad crosses Paisano Pass just west of Alpine which at 5074' is the highest point on the Sunset Route!

Alpine is the gateway to Big Bend National Park. It is also the home of Sul Ross University, which also has a campus in neighboring Del Rio, Texas, also served by the Sunset Limited.

The three day a week schedule of the Sunset limits the opportunity to travel to and from Alpine for business, pleasure, education. In west Texas travel options are few: drive, wait for a bus, or wait for the train.

If you want this to change, you have to help. There are federal matching dollars for station improvements, track and signal changes, and purchase of additional passenger cars and locomotives. Let your state and federal legislators know that passenger service benefits every Amtrak town. It's not just jobs for Amtrak, it's jobs for local people providing community services!
