Although Surabaya is not known as a good
place for a railfan, it's good to see that there are several good spots to
take the photos of passing train.
And I also glad that the local never harm
any railfanning activities. These photos are the result of my railfanning
activity in Surabaya.

This local train is pulled by a BB301
with someone's lucky number: 13. It is seen passing an unprotected crossing
in Ketintang, a suburb of Surabaya.
This BB3013 is said to be haunted,
as there is a story that one Sidotopo-based BB301 had a frightening history:
Once the driver and co-driver of the loco was involved in a bloody fighting
which killed both of them, then the loco is said to be cursed and often
ran by itself!!

A CC203 with engine
leading is seen arrived at Surabaya, with Mutiara Selatan 2nd class overnight
train from Bandung, at the same place of the picture above.
It is unusual that a long distance
train being pulled by a locomotive with engine in front.

|
CC20340 is seen arrived at Surabaya
with Turangga overnight train from Bandung on its back.
The CC20340 is normally confined to
Jakarta-Bandung corridor as, like most of Indonesia State Railway's new
locos, it usually reserved for Presidential or Government Official's train.
If you see it outside that route, that
mean there has been some locomotive shortage, or there has been some new
locomotives.

This early morning photoshot of Mutiara
Selatan overnight express train, was taken at 18 September 2004.
The photo was shot in a ricefield between
the suburb of Ketintang and Gayung Kebonsari in Surabaya.

Same date and location as the above
picture. Unless this time, the
train is the Turangga express train.
Both Turangga and Mutiara Selatan trains
operated on the same route, in the same time (night). Except that Turangga
is an airconditioned train, and have fewer stops than Mutiara Selatan.
If you looked closely, the locomotive
is running with engine in front. An unusual feature for long distance
express train.

CC20338 loco is seen pulling Bima overnight
train, bound for Jakarta, above Gubeng Terowongan bridge, above the busy
Jalan Kertajaya street in 9 September 2004.
The ad on the bridge is the advertisement
for Indonesia-Australia Language Foundation, an English language college
which was jointly owned by Indonesian and Australian education companies.
Coincidentally, the driving cab of
CC203 locomotive was also jointly designed by Indonesian and Australian
railroad company.

Further view of the same train. Note
the dining car (left) who had different livery than the rest of the train.
On the same date when this photo was
taken, a powerful bomb exploded in front of Australian embassy in Jakarta,
killing 9 people, and causing diplomatic tension between Indonesia and
Australia.
Even the IALF office near this bridge was visited by reporters in regard
of that event.

CC20319 was photographed running light
engine from West in Kandangan station.
Kandangan station was once used as
a terminus station for cattle freight train in Surabaya. And it used to
have a large number of cages around the station. But the decline of cattle
traffic in 1980s means this station has now been relegated for lesser
duty.
Kandangan station is also acted as
junction station for the branchline to Gresik. The line is visible to
the right of the picture.

|
CC20169 is seen approaching Kandangan
station at high speed, while working on Rajawali daylight, airconditioned
express train from Semarang.
The red and blue liveried locomotives
are normally used for lesser trains. Therefore this photo is a rare one.
In addition the cars which is used
for Rajawali train are the same cars which used for Harina train which
is operated between Semarang and Bandung.

BB30145 was photographed at Gresik after delivering cement cars to the
nearby plant. It headed back to Indro station, which is now a main station
of Gresik.
Locomotives and trains movement in Gresik are rare these days, as they
would normally operated early in the morning, or late in the afternoon.
Not in midday, like in this photo which was taken in 13 September 2004.
The branchline on the right is the one that goes to Petrokimia chemical
plant.
