CC203 was introduced, back in mid 1990s, as the need for faster train demanding a faster locomotive. Its streamlined cab was a ground-breaking design, although the development and the launching of the locomotive was largely unnoticed by general public.

But later, the locomotive become more popular with public as the head of fast express train in Indonesia.

The type is also regarded as a symbol of fast, modern, and (quite) efficient modern Indonesian railway.

For keen Australian viewers, the loco's driving cab looked slightly similar with EL-class locomotive, as both the cab and EL-locos are designed by the famed Goninan & Co.Ltd.
