The venerable CC201 was introduced to replace the modest and rather antiquated CC200. The locomotive later become the backbone of diesel-electric locomotive operation in Indonesia.

Although the locomotive are gradually replaced by CC203 on passenger duties (and some have been scrapped), it remains as the mainstay of diesel-electric locomotive operation in Indonesia.
