AN-class locomotive is the fastest freight locomotive in Australia. It was introduced as Australia has the longest straight railway line in the world (measured at almost 500 Km), where such line need to be travelled as quickly as possible, to avoid boredom.
There has been some report where the loco had broken speed record while hauling freight.
But its glory days seems to have been over. Since the locos were transferred to National Rail, it has never been used as leading unit for transcontinental journey, as most driver would prefer the more comfortable NR class.
But recent modification would mean this loco may be used for leading unit again.
