Texas State Railroad #300
Texas State Railroad #300
TSRR #300 is one of two surviving surviving U.S. Army “Pershing” steam engines, named after General “Blackjack” Pershing. #300 is a 2-8-0 “Consolidation”. It was built for service in Europe during World War One. Fortunately #300 stayed in the U.S. and served primarily at the Camp Polk Army Base in Leesville, Louisiana.
After World War Two, the #300 was acquired by the Tremont & Gulf Railroad, a Louisiana short line. On the Tremont & Gulf the #300 was rebuilt and renumbered as the #28. From the T & G, the #300 (then 28) went to the Southern Pine Lumber Company in East Texas. In 1973, the company owner, Mr. Arthur Temple, donated the engine to TSRR.
