Vintage Rail Photo's

Milwaukee Road Yard Area, Madison, WI
The following is a series of pictures showing the Milwaukee Road yard
area in Madison pretty much as it originally looked when in use by the railroad. These were taken after the railroad had pulled out of the area
and salvage work was just beginning which explains why everything looks really decrepit and seedy. But it was also a rare opportunity to document
some of the buildings and track layouts with the yard completely devoid of
equipment which most of the time made the more panoramic views impossible.
Included are a couple of pictures showing the Milwaukee Road - Illinois Central crossing at the west end of the yard in it's original two-diamond
configuration along with views of the roundhouse, freight house, and the
passenger station with the former commissary building that sat just west
of the depot. With the exception of the passenger station itself everything
shown here has been redeveloped - an office building occupies the former
roundhouse site and the Kohl Center sports complex sits where the freight
house was located.
