The 1992-1993 Railworks Project was the largest undertaking by SEPTA in its history. The SEPTA Main Line from Wayne Junction to Market East Station was shut down for the spring and summer months for a complete overhaul and reconfiguration of the railroad. During this period, the former Reading Lines R6 Norristown, R7 Chestnut Hill East and R8 Fox Chase had service suspended while R2 Warminster, R3 West Trenton and R5 Lansdale Doylestown trains terminated at Fern Rock and all passengers transferred at the newly rebuilt station there to the Broad Street Line for access to center city Philadelphia. Toward the end of the 1992 shutdown, service to and from Fox Chase was restored using SEPTA diesels and Bombardier cars. During the 1993 shutdown, in addition to the Fern Rock service, one Lansdale/Doylestown and one West Trenton passenger train powered by NJT and SEPTA diesels ran direct to (in the morning) and from (in the evening) 30th Street Station via SEPTA and Conrail trackage.
