PRESS RELEASE | March 5, 1999 |
The former Western Maryland Railway roundhouse and shop complex in Hagerstown, Maryland was razed in March 1999, after a ten-year effort to save it failed. Local, state and Federal officials and representatives of the Hagerstown Roundhouse Museum were unable to reach an agreement with CSX Transportation which was satisfactory to all parties.
CSXT has very graciously donated the 115 foot turntable to the Roundhouse Museum. It will be stored and eventually be the centerpiece of the new museum in the Hagerstown area. The Museum has also received a New York Central 0-6-0 steam switcher from a private individual, which the Museum plans to restore. CSXT has also assured the Museum that they may remain in their current location at 300 S. Burhans Blvd., in Hagerstown, until another location is found.
The Board of Directors of the Hagerstown Roundhouse Museum would like to thank the many people who have supported us throughout this fight. While the list is too long to mention, we deeply appreciate your support.
We also want to assure our supporters that this setback does not mean the end of our Museum. We are committed to providing a first-rate educational and tourist attraction to the people, and we are looking forward to this new challenge.
