Next up was an old maintenance of way
machine and quite a few old
passenger cars.
Above, the grey Railway Express
Agency car and the one to its right are
labeled from the Spokane Portland and Seattle Railway To the left
of the SP & S cars are an old tender. Also visible is an old
tank car which is on the ground. Most interestingly is the old
dump car which is labeled Bay Point & Clayton Railroad. This
short line railroad was in the vicinity of Port Chicago, between
Sacramento and the Bay Area. Below right is an old wooden snow
plow which sports "MR" for McCloud
River.
Amazingly, there is an old steam
engine amongst the old
equipment. The cab and boiler are on the ground and the frame and
running gear are on a nearby track to the left of the wooden box car..
The building in the below photographs
appears to once have had rails
running through it due to the size of the door openings.
Various other buildings were on the
southerly side of the
railroad. Bill told me that he believed that one factory building
used to produce pencils.
Finally we got into the main McCloud
yard area. Below left, old McCloud River fire tank car number
1713 was sitting alone. Just north of
one shop building were old box cars, now used for materials storage.
We arrived in McCloud at 5:25
PM. On the way out of the rail yard
lots more interesting equipment was visible. Three ex-Via Rail
passenger cars are waiting for restoration. The caboose was
hooked up to a old heavyweight passenger car which appeared serviceable.
Below, yet another old heavyweight
type passenger car was sitting
attached to some freight cars. Another caboose was sandwiched
between other old freight cars. This one was labeled with
reporting marks YSLR and Modoc Railroad Academy graphics.
Several diesel engines were also
present. The yellow one is a
non-operable Baldwin S-12 switcher and the other is an EMD SD-38.
Bill has been here before and stated that he has never seen the yellow
Baldwin in use or moved form this location. One ex-McCloud SD-38
is a Union Pacific yard switcher.
