Amtrak Empire Builder 75th Anniversary

Chicago Illinois to Seattle Washington

June 11 to June 13, 2004

By Richard Elgenson, RailNews Network

The Empire Builder is amost finished with the 75th anniversary run.  The Seattle Space Needle was visible for several minutes until the train entered a tunnel.  This tunnel was built by James Hill of the Great Northern Railway in a deal with Seattle city fathers to get the tracks off the waterfront.

Once the tracks emerge from the tunnel, Seahawks Stadium is visible.  King Street Station is adjacent to the stadium.  Safeco Park is next to Seahawks Stadium.  I had seen photographs of the Sounder commuter equipment.  In person, they are beautiful.

The Empire Builder pulled past King Street Station and was backed into the station.

Below are views inside King Street Station.  It is being renovated.  It had a high ceiling which was obscured with a hung ceiling.

Seattle has a pretty skyline.

On this particular Sunday, Seattle's downtown area was crowded with pedestrians.  Some were going to a graduation ceremony at Seahawks Stadium while others were walking to Safeco Park for a Mariners baseball game.  I had about 5 hours to wait for my Alaska Airlines flight back to Southern California.  I had wanted to share the photographs with Craig Thorpe and his son David, so I set up the laptop computer outside King Street Station and we had a slide show.  After that, I walked to Pyramid Brewing for lunch.

I would like to thank everyone involved at all the railroads who get the Empire Builder over the line on a daily basis.  From the top down, thanks to David Gunn, the consummate host of the 75th Anniversary Empire Builder train, June Trapley, Senior Executive Assistant to Mr. Gunn, Ray Lang, Amtrak Director of Government Affairs in Chicago, Marc Magliari, Amtrak Manager of Media Relations, Gary Erford, Amtrak Manager of Onboard Services for the Empire Builder, the train crews who were invisible getting us over the line, the Canadian Pacific Railway, the Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railway, and Craig Thorpe, and many other people whose name I never got who were just as important to the success of the Anniversary run.  Also thank you to the employees of the Empire Builder who work 6 days straight making the passengers experience the best.
