The next surprise was to be escorted aboard the ex-SP 2873 for
locomotive operation instruction. The WPRR Museum is well known
for their "Run-A-Locomotive
program", started after a visitor offered cash for the experience
of
running a real locmotive. Charlie Spikes, R-A-L engineer and
facility manager, mentored most of our group into the engineers
seat. I volunteered to go last since I have
operated various locomotives out on live rails and also once previously
at
the WPRR Museum.
Before my turn, a couple was waiting for their turn to rent the
2873. Management made the decision to have us vacate for the real
live customers and volunteered the WP 707 for my run-a-locomotive
operation. While I operated the 707, the rest of the tour group
visited more equipment and took a coffee break at the gift shop.
Notice the matching vests with railroad cross bucks and steam
locomotives. Her bag says "Women and the American Railroad" with
women on the pilot of a steam locomotive.
The museum has a collection of WP F units.
Below, the Foley Brothers boxcab locomotive is a very early generation
diesel.
