The United States Railway Administration took over the railroads in December 1917. Standard
freight car designs were developed to ease the car shortage. 25,000 single sheathed cars were
built between 1918 and 1920 and assigned to 26 roads. Too late for the war, they served as a
standard for a decade. All USRA SS kits now contain both K and AB brakes.
Richmond Fredericksburg & Potomac received 350 cars from USRA in August 1919 and purchased another 150 in 1926 from Washington Southern. The cars were rebuilt with AB brakes in 1939. Numerous small changes in lettering style occurred during the cars' long lives and we model all of them, 1919-1972.
