Woodford, Va on the RF&P WOODFORD, VA

Originally named DOWNER'S BRIDGE when the line was opened to this point on
October 26 1836.  Later referred to as Woodford's Lane, then contracted to
Woodslane.  The post office was always called Woodford, so in 1922 the
station was permanetly changed to coincide.  The name WOODFORD was chosen
to
honor of a local resident and Revolutionary War hero, General William
Woodford.

To reach Woodford, take Virginia Route 2 North from Bowling Green or South
from Fredericksburg to Caroline County Route 626, near the Villeboro
entrance to Fort A. P. Hill.  Turn West (Woodford Road) and go 2.0 miles to
the crossing.

SIDINGS:
   N/B (Track 2)  A single siding North of the crossing, curved away from
                     the crossing and went back across Rt 626, between 2
buildings to the Lyons and later "B. C. HARDING..."
                     "HAY GRAIN MEAL..." and Excellsior mill.
   S/B (Track 3)  A single siding South of the crossing, went back parallel
                     to Track 3, past livestock pens equipped with loading
ramp(s), past the combined frame-structured passenger
                     and freight station, across Rt 626 and dead-ending a
                     short distance North of the crossing. The siding was
                     1500 feet in length, approx.

STRUCTURES REMAINING TODAY:
   N/E corner  Another Feed & Grain Store but wasn't served by RF&P-closed
   N/W corner  General Store - Boarded up
               Garage and Store - Boarded up
               Cinder block P.O. currently in other use
   S/W corner  The only remaining FRAME Structured Passenger and Freight
Sta.
                  It is privately owned and was moved back from the RR ROW
                  It is suggested that you respect the privacy of its
owner.
               A relatively modern country Post Office - Woodford, VA 22580

LONG-GONE ITEMS OF INTEREST:
  S/E corner   A rectangular loading platform built to car heigth.  With
                  steps, no ramps and right at the crossing.
               The excellsior plant which was probably powered by a
                  stationary steam engine.
  N/W corner   A mail pick-up stand

PHOTOGRAPHING:
   P.M. works the best.
   The station can be bracketed either from the road or the P O parking lot
   Remember, view the station from a distance.
   Listen for equipment defect detectors at Summit for S/B and Penola for
      N/B.  This will give you about 6 & 10 minutes, respectively.

When you leave downtown Woodford, proceed East 0.75 miles, turn left onto
Rt
609.  Proceed North to a LEFT turn onto Rt 607.  This will take you to the
next point of interest - GUINEA.
