Below is a list of depots located on the former Western Region in alphabetical order. The list is not complete and will be added to in due course.

Aylesbury TMD

Location: To the north of Aylesbury Station on the freight only line to Calvert.

Allocation: 165, 168

Usual Classes: 165, 168

Vantage Points: From Aylesbury station proceed along the road which follows the freight only line to Calvert. The depot can be viewed from this road and from the footbridge which crosses the railway directly north of Aylesbury station.

Visit Permits: Unknown


Barry WRD

Location: South side of the line adjacent to Barry Town station.

Allocation: N/A

Usual Classes: 08/09, 37, 56, 60, 66

Vantage Points: The depot can be viewed from trains to Barry Island and from Barry Town station. The 08/09 shunter out-stabled to Barry WRD usually stables behind the depot and is only visible from the train after leaving Barry Town for Barry Island and not from the station.

Visit Permits: Not Issued


Cardiff Canton TMD

Location: West of Cardiff Central station, to the south of the mainline to Bridgend and west of the Barry Island branch.

Allocation: 08, 09, 97

Usual Classes: 08, 09, 37, 47, 56, 60, 66

Vantage Points: From Cardiff Central station turn left into Saunders Road then left into Wood Street. This crosses over the River Taff and leads into Tudor Street and then Ninian Park Road. After half a mile turn left into De Croche Place. A footbridge at the end of the road crosses the South Wales main line and leads to the depot. Public are allowed as far as the security gate which is located at the far end of the footbridge.

Cardiff Canton DMUD

Location: South of Cardiff Canton TMD, west of the Barry Island branch.

Allocation: 08, 143, 150, 153, 158

Usual Classes: 143, 150, 153, 158

Vantage Points: The depot can be viewed from a distance on trains to / from Barry Island.

Visit Permits: Not Issued


Didcot Stabling Point

Location: Adjacent to Didcot Parkway station on the north side of the GWML.

Allocation: N/A

Usual Classes: 08, 37, 58, 60, 66

Vantage Points: The stabling point can be viewed from Didcot Parkway station and the Didcot Railway Centre.

Visit Permits: N/A


Exeter Stabling Point

Location: Adjacent to Exeter St. Davids station.

Allocation: N/A

Usual Classes: 08, 37, 47, 60, 66, 150, 153, 159

Vantage Points: The stabling point can be viewed from the station.

Visit Permits: Not Issued


Newport Godfrey Road

Location: To the north west of Newport station next to the mainline to Cardiff.

Allocation: N/A

Usual Classes: 09, 37, 47, 60, 66

Vantage Points: 1) The loco sidings can be viewed from the west end of platforms 2/3 at Newport station.

2) Leave the station by the car park exit, the loco sidings can be viewed from the car park and by leaving the car park turn left into Godfrey Road. The depot can be viewed from the road and from the bridge.

Old Oak Common TMD

Location: On the north side of the Great Western Mainline about 2 miles west of Paddington.

Allocation: 08, 09, 31, 37

Usual Classes: 08, 09, 31, 33, 37, 47, 58, 60, 66, 67, 73

Vantage Points: From Willesden Junction Low Level station turn left down the approach road towards Willesden TMD. After passing under the North London line turn right and cross the WCML on the footbridge. Follow the footpath to the end then turn right passing under the North London line again. At the end of this road turn right then after approx.50 metres turn left along a footpath. Cross the over the canal and Old Oak Common TMD can be viewed from the canal towpath. Warning:- Parts of the depot can't be seen due to dense vegetation alongside the canal path.

Reading TMD

Location: Situated in the triangle bounded to the north by the Great Western Main Line, to the west by Reading west curve and to the east by the line to Reading West and Westbury.

Allocation: DMU

Usual Classes: DMU

Vantage Points: The depot can be viewed from any of the railway lines on the triangle.

Visit Permits: Unknown


Swindon LIP

Location: To the west of Swindon station on the north side of the Great Western Main Line.

Allocation: N/A

Usual Classes: 08, 37, 58, 66

Vantage Points: The depot can be viewed from the west end of Swindon station and from passing trains.

LATEST NEWS= The LIP has recently shut but locos still stable in the yards to the east of Swindon station.

Visit Permits: Not Issued
