35012 was a member of the 30-strong Southern Railway "Merchant Navy" class. Built at Eastleigh in December 1944 as number 21C 12 and named "United States Lines", the loco was renumbered 35012 following nationalisation of the main British railway companies (1948) and withdrawn from service in April 1967.
The two cutouts (centre top and bottom) were necessary to provide clearance for the upper lamp bracket.
