2007 got off to a fast start with two events having occurred in January.

There was an e-mail discussion about adding hand held controllers to the yard modules for better control of yard operations. There was one for sale but it had been sold before the discussion was complete. It was decided that we would try to procure one in the near future anyway.

Our first meeting of the year was held at Chuck Smith's home. There was some discussion about the work being done to the modules at the Medley Centre. Refreshments were served and after that everyone went to Chuck's train room for an operating session. Chuck helped Bill Johnson fix some bugs in his 332DC locomotive that he recently bought. As it was nearing time for everyone to leave, Chuck had three trains running smoothly so he stepped away from his layout control panel to say goodbye to everyone.

It was about this time that Superman put in an appearance. (He had been there all the time but had not been noticed.) It is legendary that Superman can leap tall buildings with a single bound, stop a speeding locomotive, etc. But stop three speeding locomotives instantly?
Wow!
The cause for this sudden burst of activity was a derailment in the far corner of the layout. Superman with Chuck's help killed the power to the control panel and everything stopped.

Chuck's clever emergency stop feature is a ceiling light fixture with a pull string to which superman is attached. A plug socket is screwed into the light fixture and the control panel is plugged into it.
This is a great idea for anyone who has a conventionally powered layout or plans to build one!
The meeting was attended by George Cole, Joe Cordaro, Jeff Faust, Bill Johnson, Ted Larson, Duane Miner, and our host, Chuck Smith. Thank you Chuck and Betty for having us over. We had a great time.

On January the 2nd, George Cole organized a get together for as many RASG members who could attend  a switching session at Jim Voldan's home in Hilton, NY. Jim has a nice HO layout that is set up for switching sessions. These sessions are set up so that each piece of rolling stock has its picture on both sides of a "waybill" and a destination on one side and the return destination on the other.   It proved to be a enjoyable challenge to pick up and drop off the various pieces of rolling stock in an efficient sequence. Once we had the basics mastered, Jim added to the challenge by running a passenger train around the single track mainline with the object being that your switch train  had to yield the right of way to the passenger train.  George Cole, Jeff Faust, Chuck Smith and myself, Bill Johnson, were there to join in on the fun. Here are a few pictures of this event.
