A group of 15 CNW F-7As (406-414, 416) were leased to RTA for commuter service. During 1983 winter break I went to Libertyville, IL to visit my parents who had just moved to Chicago. A railfan buddy of mine had an interview in Chicago while I was there, and we decided to take a trip down on the train to Union Station to take some pictures of commuter engines. As we passed through a snow covered yard we saw a string of F units, and on the spur of the moment we got off the train at Western Avenue. We had to walk about a mile back to the engines (this was during a record cold snap on Chicago it was about 0 deg.) While taking the photos the shutter in my camera froze (luckily I carried a spare body). We then had to walk the mile back to the station to wait for the train back. The station was cold and the people on the station were huddled around the steam heat registers which were not giving up much heat. I just remember the cold. Anyway, here are the photos of the stored F-7As.
