AMTRAK SERVICE NOTES:
As of March 1998, 192 rebuilt and delegated to work train specifications - rebuilt done at Wilmington, DE - work included crossing lights, new cab signal unit (installed ACSES cab signal into them, and the 199 was the FIRST locomotive in North America to have this installed - Beech Grove rebuilt 564/568 and some or all of the coaches for the Texas Commuter service), front plate removed, cab signal bars added to rear for road switching
all GP40Hs now have the same longer fuel tank in 1988 or 1989 (1500Imp or 1800US?), two 38" cooling fans and an exhaust stack similar to that on a tractor trailor (The square box contained the fairly large muffler for the DD12V149 HEP - Cummins or Cat HEP unit likely provided enough weight savings to allow for the larger fuel tank)
TCs were used as the sole power on Empire Corridor trains, and eventually replaced by F40s that were not needed elsewhere
in their final days of passenger service some of the HEP units got broken so they were used as power units
added onto the engineers side of the nose is a buldge where AMT installed circuits for the cab signal and ditch lights
Thanks to Matt Donnelly and A Johnson for addtional notes on this locomotive
