Norfolk Southern Engines 4 axle GE: the early years. Albany, Ga; May 1998. Southern, in typical fashion, had GE make a custom version of the B23-7
long hood forward and high short hood. 3981 is part of the consist that
came down from Macon on train # 418.
Tenille, Ga; March 1999. B30-7A1, 1 of 22, was built for Southern with a grille by the
cab and the short high hood.
Bluefield, WV; October 1997. Only 49 of these engines were built, 45 of them are on the Norfolk
Southern roster, and one on the General Electric roster.
This is probably one of the first engine Southern/Norfolk Southern
bought with a short low nose.
NE Chula, Ga; November 2000. NS inherited a few GEs from Conrail. NS 4031 is part of a power transfer
that includes over a dozen engines. If the renumbering system was systematic,
this B23-7 was Conrail 1917, part of the first Conrail order for these
engines, which rides on AAR type B road trucks. NS also inherited some
B23-7R (NS4093-4099) all in bad shape and probably on their way out.
Tallahassee, Fl; April 2000. Despite belonging to NS, 3624, B36-7 former Conrail 5051, gets an intermodal
job on CSX Q102 from New Orleans, LA to Jacksonville, FL.
B40-8 from Conrail (NS4800-4817); no picture at this time.
