Norfolk Southern Engines: EMD 4 axles; the later years. I have yet to see one of the 6 GP49 ever built all owned by NS.
They were built as GP 39 X with a high nose (NS 4600-4605).
Bayou Cassote, Ms; March 1998. 7012, an ex-Southern GP 50, also with Blomberg trucks, is leading a
maintenance of way train on an industrial spur off the CSX mainline on
the Gulf Coast.
Chattanooga, Tn; May 1998. 4610, a GP59, displays the beautiful job by the "local" paint shop.
A few of the other 36 GP59s from NS, the only customer for this engine,
have the Operation Life Savers scheme such as 4638 below. When spotting
GP59s, watch for the nose with rounded corners and egdes. It would be one
of the 3 EMD former demonstrators.
Macon, Ga; October 2000. NS 4658: GP 59.
Keystone, WV; October 1997. 7120, a GP 60 (probably one of the first engine with a low nose to
land on the Norfolk Southern roster), is leading an eastbound coal train
toward Roanoke.
Valdosta, Ga; December 1999. Right after the take-over, power crunch was handled with older less
powerful engines. NS 5352, a GP38-2 was part of the series NS5257-5393.
Macon, Ga; April 2000. Almost a year after the effective date of the merger, most Conrail
engines had been renumbered as this GP 40-2. Even if Norfolk Southern decides
to repaint the older models, it is unlikely that they will add a high nose
back to these engines..., making them easy to spot.
GP38 ex Conrail NS2880-2957; no pictures at this time.
