Norfolk Southern Engines: EMD 4 axles; the early years. South End Macon , Ga; September 2000. GP 40s such as 1357 are being used by Norfolk Southern as heavy duty
yard switchers with slugs to pull the long strings of cars out of the classification
yard and into the departure yard. Very Few of these ex Norfolk & Western
engines are left. Also, Norfolk Southern did not get any GP40-2s until
the Conrail take-over.
Vienna, Ga; June 2000. GP38s were more popular that GP40s with NS. 2795, an ex-Southern, is
in the lead of the local switching at a plant on the South side of town.
Tuscaloosa, Al; February 1997. GP38AC 2850, also an ex Southern, is parked by the Amtrak depot waiting
for the next assignment
Macon, Ga; April 2000. This ex Norfolk & Western GP38AC, 4104, is helping with a northbound
freight through Macon Junction.
Selma, Al, February 1997. GP38-2, 5151, with Bloomberg trucks, is preparing the Meridian train
in the middle of the afternoon.
