Bill's Trip To Colorado
The first three pictures are of an eastbound UP merchandise coming up the west side of Tennessee Pass, from Minturn up to the summit. In charge is UP SD60M 6350, SP SD40T-2 8282 and 8290 (Tunnel Motors), NS SD60 6576, and UP SD60M 6219. Helpers added at Minturn and cut in about 3/4 of the way back are SP 222 371 UP 7017 and SP 183, all AC4400CW (the UP is a AC4400CW(U) meaning it is upgradable). (MIDDLE) This is taken between Camp Hale and the summit 2. This is the helpers coming around the "S" curves just west of the summit 3) (RIGHT)The train coming under US24 at Camp Hale, the WWII training group for troops of the 10th Mountain Division (1942-1944). The 10th Mtn was the only specialized mountain/ski soliders in the history of the US Army. Photos and text by Bill Thievon.
DRGW GP40 3085 heads south on the Montrose branch, just south of Delta Colorado (running long hood forward. The branch used to run to Ouray, and actually was part of the Rio Grande's original mainline (narrow guage) over Marshall Pass (it turned east at Montrose and headed to Gunnison). Just a local. The summit of Tennesse Pass, on the east side of the summit looking (track wise) toward Pueblo. The summit tunnel is directly behind me. Photos and text by Bill Thievon.
