The New York Central issued what is known as the “Safety Sets” in
May 1956. NYC sent three cars around its system to promote a new safety program
- Inspection Car No.30, Caboose No.20207, and another car I’ve not been able to
identify. Caboose 20207 was actually painted in the same green-and-white colors
as these matches. Displayed on the sides of the three cars was the very same
artwork that appears on the fronts of these matches. . . NYC’s brand new
Aerotrain locomotive bursting out of the NYC oval herald. The matchbooks were
used as handouts to NYC employees only, being provided by officials who rode in
one of the three cars. There are a known total of 120 different matchbooks in this series alone! Five different designs were used in each of 24 sets. All five of the covers within one set were imprinted with the name of one of 22 specific NYC operating Divisions; one set was blank with no imprint; and another set contained the words “Safety Car”. Notice that the set here is from the Western Division, which extended from Elkhart, IN to Chicago, and over to De Pue Jct., IL. (This information was provided by Steve Kovacs of Osseo, MI.) The first two covers in the row below are from the collection of Gary Bienfang, Reading, PA |
