With the Jersey Central, Reading, Baltimore & Ohio, Staten Island, and Rahway Valley (the B&O and Reading had trackage rights over the CNJ mainline) all operating through the areas of Aldene and Cranford Junctions, there had to be some oversight to all of this.

In an effort to contend with all of this activity taking place here, the CNJ erected the Excee Tower (earlier styled the "X C" Tower) to oversee operations at both Aldene and Cranford.

Excee Tower remained in service for many years, but with dwindling operations at this location there was little need for it by the 1990's. NJ Transit removed the tower from service in July, 1990. Thereafter, Delaware Otsego, which was operating both the former SIRT and RVRR, had to travel to CP Clark in Westfield to cross over the former CNJ main.
