France, Campbell, and Darling,
Inc., manufacturers of synthetic resins, rosin gum, and
gum opal, located their plant to Kenilworth, NJ in 1940. For
many years they shipped carloads via the Rahway Valley
Railroad. Synthetic resins, rosin gum, and gum opal are
materials which have similar properties to plant resins and
act as a synthetic substitute. Having many applications, they
can be used as ingredients in printing inks, varnishes,
adhesives (glues), soap, soda, soldering fluxes, and sealing
wax. Rosin gum can also be used as a glazing agent in
medicines and chewing gum.
The Rahway
Valley Railroad constructed a spur into France, Campbell, and Darling’s plant
which sat on N. Michigan
Avenue.
