Before they were museum pieces, Engines #16 and 17 were the workhorses of the Rahway Valley Railroad for more than thirty years. Built by General Electric in 1951 and 1954, respectively, these two 70 tonners faithfully served the Rahway Valley Railroad and its customers and were meticulously maintained by the railroad's shop force.

After the Delaware Otsego Corporation took over the Rahway Valley Railroad in 1986, #16 & 17 remained on the railroad for a few more years but were replaced by larger EMD power by the end of 1989. #16 & 17 went to serve on multiple railroads owned by the Delaware Otsego Corporation, more specifically the Cooperstown & Charlotte Valley Railroad and the New York, Susquehanna, and Western Railroad. The engines were then donated to the United Railway Historical Society in 1995. The engines were stored in multiple locations for a number of years. They were put on loan to the Whippany Railway Museum in Whippany, NJ in the early 2000s, where they are displayed today.

#16 & 17 are presently in inoperable condition and there are no tentative plans to return them to service. #16 was restored to its as delivered paint scheme while #17 awaits its factory paint scheme in a coat of primer.
