Train strikes car stopped for traffic violation
NEWARK, Del. (AP) -- A car pulled over by police stopped on a train track and was struck by a frieght train, killing a passanger and seriously injuring the driver, authorities said Thursday.
The other two of the car's passangers and the train driver were not injured.
The four Oxford, Pa., men were pulled over late Wednesday night for driving the wrong way down a one-way street, Newark Police Chief Gerald Conway said.
None of the car's occupants spoke English and by the time a Spanish-speaking officer arrived to translate, the train was approaching. Attempts to start the car failed. The train was going 40 mph, officials said.
No charges have been filed. Conway said the officer who pulled the car over was placed on administrative duty pending the outcome of the investigation.
