POTB gets a motive power boost! (page 2)

Fields of Green: POTB motive power boost, page 2

Three units are on the property, seven to go. We continue our look at the Port of Tillamook Bay' big motive power boost with a look at the past of three units, and a glimpse of the first units in service.

6113 was a boomer for Burlington Northern. For a long stretch, it was a common unit on the locals around Pasco, WA, where we caught it with a caboose in tow on the Big Pasco local in Spring, 2000. The hardest part of gathering the information when I found out the units were coming was distinguishing between the locomotives that still carried their BN numbers and those that had been renumbered into the BNSF system. 6116 was one of the latter, originally BN 6228. (not to be confused with BN 6116, ex-GN 589, which was retired before the merger.) Here's our unit as Colorado & Southern 833 at Denver on March 29, 1975. Paul Birkholtz sent us this photo of BNSF 6116 as it rolled through Sheridan, WY trailing the power on train M LINLAU3-26, a merchandise train from Lincoln, NE to Laurel, MT on Jan. 28. The 6116 was destined to be parked in Tacoma for an extended stay. You can visit Paul's website at www.mtnwestrail.com to see more of his work from around the west.
After beginning their trips each spaced out by a few days, BN 6113, BN 6157 and BNSF 6116 found their way to Banks together on Feb. 25. The next day, they were headed toward the Miami River Road crossing behind the 101 and 6178. Photo by Jody Moore. On a sunny day a few days later, the trio rests in the Tillamook Industrial Park. The three have yet to have their logos patched. Photo by Jody Moore.
In late February, the 6178 was placed on the hill freight's consist. A westbound train of empties is drifting downgrade along the Nehalem river near MP 817 with the 78 and 4414 trailing the 4406 and 4405. We caught up the pair on March 7 as they guided the coast switch through Rockaway Beach on the way back to Tillamook. Photo by Jody Moore.
