From 1994 to 1997, I was a post-doctoral
associate at Boyce Thompson Institute at Cornell University in
Upstate New York. While there, I had the tremendous opportunity
to go out and photograph the area railroads. This included Conrail's
Water Level and Southern Tier routes, NYS&W and CP trains
on their ex-Erie Lackawanna and D&H routes and as runthroughs
on the Southern Tier, and several tourist operations that dotted
the state. In my opinion, New York State is underappreciated for
its subtle beauty, which helped to create bucolic settings for
my rail photography. I certainly hope that you can see why I loved
living in this area so much when you browse through the photos
I took while there. I would like to thank both Bruce Fingerhood
and Tom Trencansky for assistance with some of these shots, especially
the night photography in and around Ithaca.
