N-scale Varnish Passenger Car User's Guide

Southern Pacific/Texas & New Orleans

12 NEW SIDES SETS BY LAZOR HORIZONS ADDED 14 MAY 2005.

Click here to visit Fred Klein's excellent N-scale Passenger Car website

Southern Pacific is a road that had a large variety of equipment and a very diverse passenger train operation.  In addition to its own Daylight (day time), Lark and Cascade (night time) trains the line also participated in through train operations in conjunction with the Burlington Route (the California Zephyr after Western Pacific withdrew their participation with this train), Rock Island, and Union Pacific, which fielded three key operations, the City trains (City of Los Angeles and City of San Francisco), The Challenger and The Overland Route.  The following are cars that can be accurately modeled currently in N-scale using available car sides, kits and R-T-R models.  The list below are recommendations only, based on the best information that I have on-hand.

Of all the tables that have been worked on this one has proven to be the most difficult because of all the changes that SP passenger cars went through.  As this page currently is presented there is still a lot of information that I am seeking so that what is presented might be more complete. If you know of additions or corrections that need to be made, or know of suitable decals for lettering these cars, please email me by Clicking Here.

* - It should be noted that the Union Station Products are Craftsman-level kits.  Some clean-up of parts and assembly is required, and care must be exercised when assembling these sides because of the delicate parts.

Note 1:  Where two numbers are listed for M&R models (except otherwise noted) there are sides available representing cars that have skirting and having skirting removed.  Please see the M&R Models page for more information.

Note 2:  Several series of sleepers of the Southern Pacific which were transferred from Union Pacific carried names for a time.  The following series carried names while on the Union Pacific, and for a short time on the SP as well.  (Also see note 6 about Golden-series cars.):

  • The following are the car names of the Imperial-series:    Imperial Harbor    Imperial Horn

  • The following are the car names of the American-series (all ex-UP):
American Canyon American Elm American Manor American Ranger
American Charm American Forum American Merchant American Rose
American Dairyland American Guard American Rampart

Note 3:  The Kato smooth-sided sleeper observation would be a good starting point for these two cars, though the cars did not keep their rounded ends for very long before they were rebuilt to blunt-end observation cars.  Modifications to the roof end would be necessary if a more accurate model is desired as these cars had charactoristic SP tail-lights mounted in a built-up housing.

Note 4:  This car was an experiment by SP to create a high-capacity commuter coach from a Daylight car.  It was the only commuter car to be painted in the Sunset silver with a red stripe.  This set of sides could be used for creating a STAND-IN for this car, which would be used with other SP suburban equipment, though it has one more window than the rebuilt car has on one side of the car, with the sides representing the car's original window pattern.

Note 5:  There currently is not a suitable core kit for building one of the blunt-end 10 - 6 sleepers observation cars and they are mentioned only as a reference.

Note 6:  As a part of their assignment to the Golden State-route a number of cars were assigned names in the Golden-series.  At this time I do not have complete details of which cars wore what name nor do I know if cars actually carried these names, but below is a listing of car names that were used for certain types of cars.  If you could help me to fill in the information on these cars, please email the webmaster.  (Note:  You must remove the NOSPAM for the address to work.)

Note 7:  These cars were built for the City of Los Angeles and City of San Francisco joint-trains operated by the Chicago & North Western, Union Pacific and Southern Pacific with all cars being owned by all three roads.  When the car ownership was split-up in 1947 to the participating roads, these cars were transferred to the Southern Pacific.

Note 8:  Both sets of sides are necessary for creating this articulated twin-unit diner.

Note 9:  These cars were sold to the SP after Union Pacific rerouted the Overland Route passenger trains from the Chicago and NorthWestern to the Milwaukee Road.  Some cars operated in yellow and green with silver SP lettering until they were able to receive complete repainting.

Note 10:  This car was acquired from Amtrak for conversion to an Instruments car.  This car can be represented by using a Kato California Zephyr 10 Rmt - 6 DBR sleeper.

Note 11:  This car was acquired from Amtrak for use in Company service.  This car can be represented by using a Kato California Zephyr dome - coach.

Note 12:  Cars in this series were assigned to a variety of trains.  2981 - 2983 were painted in two-tone gray for use on the Overland, 2984 carried the name Golden View and 2985 carried the name Golden Outlook and carried red and silver paint for use on the Golden State, and 2986 was painted in UP colors for use on the City of San Francisco

Note 13:  Baggage - dorm cars 3100 was painted for use on the Golden State while 3101 was painted in UP colors for use on the City of San Francisco

Note 14:  Coaches 2380 and 2381 were painted in UP colors for use on the City of San Francisco.  Coaches 2399 - 2401 carried the names Golden Nugget, Golden Bar and Golden Flake respectively and were painted for use on the Golden State.

Note 15:  These cars were named and painted for use on the Golden State, 2377 Golden Ore and 2377 Golden Sand.

Note 16:  These cars were apparently built in two different configurations, one with the vestibule forward, the other with the vestibule rearward.  At the present time I do not know how the numbers were broken down, hense the double listings for the same numbers.

Note 17:  Three sets of sides are needed to model these cars.  the Lazor Horizons sides are as follows:  SP7572 are for the coffee shop unit, N-SP7573 is for the kitchen unit and N-SP7574 is for the dining room unit.
