Canadian National Electric commuter trains Montreal Commuter trains to downtown Montreal were first operated by pre-decessor Canadian Northern. A tunnel at Mt.Royal required the use of electric locomotives, later supplemented by M.U. equipment. Trains were hauled by a small roster of boxcab electric locomotives the first of which were built by GE 1914-17 for CNoR 100-105 87-tons. Further boxcabs weighing 101 tons were acquired second-hand from National Harbours Board. A final three units of more modern centercab design were built by GE in 1950.All units were 1100 HP. 6712 (ex CNoR 102) leads a sister with a long afternoon train northbound at Mount Royal.
