Commercial Travellers' Association of Canada Commercial Travellers were an important part of commerce and for many decades they went about their business using passenger trains to reach their customers in cities and towns everywhere. These travelling salesmen carried with them samples of their wares, all kinds of products needed all over the country. Often they would stay at local hotels setting up their wares and retailers would come to them. Other times they would go to the buyer. Large numbers of these men made their living this way,
so many in fact the Commercial Travellers' Association of Canada was
created for them. It issued identification cards that entitled them
to reduced rates for transportation as well as at hotels. In addition
they were permitted to carry their large sample cases (up to 300 pounds)
with them. This was approved by the Canadian Passenger Association
representing railways and other transportation companies.
