Swansea Transfer 6271 on the Swansea Transfer backing up through Sunnyside. In the 1950’s the day Swansea was the highest paying yard job, held by senior men including my grandfather who at the time had seniority number 1! (He retired off this job shortly after I started railroading.) Regular overtime helped, as did an old held-over Local Agreement that gave the engine crew 1 hour extra to take the engine from Parkdale yard to John Street Roundhouse. However, in diesel days the engine was simply left in the old water track next to the yard office and the hour was still paid! |
