Destruction of Lambton Roundhouse

Demolition of Lambton roundhouse has begun in October 1960. Viewed from the Here Yard looking north towards Runnymede Road. I watched the crane operator take a swing with the wrecking ball. It bounced harmlessly off the cement horizontal beam. He tried again with a harder swing and chipped off a small piece! After two or three tries, he gave up and went home! Next day, bigger wrecking ball, same results! It was necessary to air hammer away the concrete, then using a torch, cut through the steel rail used as re-enforcing "rods". Note also the two upright rails used in vertical columns. Obviously, the contractor thought it would a cinch to knock down this old condemned building. I'll bet he lost big $ on this deal! Contractor's crane is working at the far end of the roundhouse near 37 pit.

Note the "covered wagon" diesels on the shop tracks, only a few years old at the time.

Following the closure of the Lambton facility, yard and local diesels were once again assigned to West Toronto roundhouse! West Toronto Scrap Dock was relocated, and here, shop tracks lead to the turntable. Diesels were fueled at a facility built at the old gas house nearby. Booking office, locker room etc. was located in a
small roundhouse annex.
