Remarks: Rebuilt from 'B' class 4-8-0s of 1899. Designed to assist the H Class Fell engines on the Rimutaka Incline, they had a centre-rail brake fitted. In this incline duty they were an unqualified success. With the purchase, by the NZR, of the Wellington & Manawatu Railway in 1908, the tonnage over the Rimutaka incline diminished and one of the 'We's was transferred to the West Coast for use on the Greymouth-Rewanui branch. This incline consisted of 2-3/4 miles graded at 1 in 25 and was equipped with a centre rail for braking purposes. The 'We' therefore was ideally suited for this duty and the other two 'We's were also transferred there. |
