Remarks: During 1897 a second 2-8-0 Vauclain compound was ordered by the Wellington and Manawatu Railway Company similar to No.13, but heavier and more powerful. Its regular work load was to haul the New Plymouth mail trains over the Wellington-Paekakariki section up the 1 in 36-40 grades to Johnsonville. It handled 225 tons and 280 tons respectively over the 1 in 56 ruling grades between Johnsonville and Paekakariki. When the Government took over the W&MRC, their No.16 became Class 'Oc' No.458. |
