Remarks:
In 1901, the Wellington & Manawatu Railway Company ordered another Vauclain compound from Baldwin.
Built to the requirements for passenger service between Paekakariki and Longburn, it had a wide firebox and was the largest "Prairie" type locomotive yet seen in New Zealand.
A second locomotive of this type was obtained in 1904, this time with an all-steel cab in place of the wooden one. Both locomotives
were economical with coal demands and were noted for their easy running and smooth riding qualities. With the Government takeover of the line, these two engines became Class 'Nc' with numbers 461 and 462. Ex Wellington & Manawatu Railway Co. #5 (2nd) & #18 |
