Remarks: Seven of the Fa's were built new, others rebuilt from class 'F'. NZR Addington. In 1892 a start was made with the rebuilding of a number of 'F' class saddle tank locomotives into'Fa' class 0-6-0 side tank locomotives, with new larger boilers and larger cylinders. The locomotive weight was increased from the 19.5 tons then quoted for an 'F' to 24.0 tons for the 'Fa'. Although the water capacity was substantially increased, the coal bunkers remained small, which limited the range of operations. The locomotives were then further modified with piston valves and an added trailing truck to support a larger coal bunker. During this process they were classified as 'Fb' (refer Fb). |
