Remarks: By the mid-1920s much of the shunting work in New Zealand was being performed by obsolete locomotives so a report suggested that a more powerful Shunting engine should be designed and built. However it was another six years before the 'C' class 2-6-2 was specifically designed for heavy shunting work in both islands. In many respects, the 'C' was a thoroughly modern tender version of the 'Wf' however the final design incorporated a wide firebox and a light axle loading. These engines were noteworthy for many modern features, including an air-operated "Butterfly" fire door, air-operated reversing gear, and a "Commonwealth" cast-steel trailing truck. The tender had a sloping back of an American switcher and was provided with a cab for all-weather protection. To round off a good package, they were superheated and fitted with electric lighting. |
