Remarks: Essentially similar to the 'B' class, the 'Ba' had some differences with superheated boilers and slightly smaller fireboxes. A massive vee-shaped headstock was originally fitted, perhaps to deflect snowdrifts in inland Otago and Southland. Intended primarily for the haulage of heavy freight trains at speeds up to 30 m.p.h., but like other Dunedin locomotives, took their turn on passenger trains. All but two were ultimately fitted with tender cabs and placed into shunting duties. Five were rebuilt with wide-firebox boilers; two in 1928, and three 1948-1949. |
