Mapping New Zealand's rail lines
NZ Railway Line Based Maps

The Railway section of this site documents the Railway lines of New Zealand. Historically most of these lines were owned by the New Zealand government. They were privatised in 1993 but renationalised in 2004. There is also a growing network of privately owned lines, practically all of which are heritage or tourist railways, first established in NZ in the 1960s.
This site has been reorganised several times in the last two weeks which I extend apologies for. This is a fairly ambitious project and it needs to have the right structure to make it easy to access and maintain.
In order to get the major task of mapping done, the work will now be completed in several stages:
Stage 1 is to draw paths for every railway line which is already visible in Google Earth. This means that some lines will be incomplete if some of the line does not have the full Digital Globe or aerial mapping coverage that enables me to see the exact route that the line followed in Google Earth. In Stage 1, only actual routes are mapped; features or stations are not marked.
Stage 2 is to fill in gaps in the paths that are due to insufficient satellite coverage. For the most part these are done by mapping the lines in Google Maps and importing to Google Earth.
Stage 3 is to fill in the features or detail of each line.
Site Structure
The Railway section of this site is organised into folders according to the main lines of New Zealand. In each of these folders you will find files for that main line, and separate files for each of the branch or private lines that are or were connected with that main line. As many private lines had a historical connection with main lines their data will be stored thusly, even if there is not any present day physical connection with that main line. The Other folder stores data for private lines that don't have any historical connection with any main line.
In each of these folders there are often multiple versions of each file. This is done for archival purposes. However as time goes on the some of the older files will be removed to free up space for newer ones.
