About Jake Mensel
I grew up in Greensboro, North Carolina, a big railroad town, and that is where my interest
in trains came from. There are 6 rail lines going in and out of Greensboro, and the closest to
where I lived was the old A&Y Mainline that runs in the median between Battleground Avenue and Lawndale Avenue.
I would sit in the parking lot of the grocery store and watch the daily local come up and run around their train at the Sears
siding. I soon began going over the Amtrak Station on Oakland Avenue to watch trains. I started to seriously railfan around
1999, right after the Conrail merger, when the old Conrail power was still around. In 2003, I switched over to Digital Photography,
and after that change I will never go back to film.
While my primary photography subjects are railroads, I also take a limited number of Nature and "Industrial Archaeology", or Urban Exploring
photos when the opportunity arises, as well as some Human Interest pictures.
As you can see from the picture, I am also a firefighter in addition to a photographer.
